How to Adapt Your IT Strategy for Massive Data Growth

When data grows exponentially, enterprise data storage and management must scale accordingly.

As an enterprise grows, so does the data it collects. When discussing the needs of businesses across  industries, one word everyone is talking about is “scalability.” But scalability is especially important when it comes to data.

No matter what your goals might be for this year, evaluating your data storage needs is an essential way to ensure growth. Focusing on data growth is an important way to meet the ever-changing demands of an increasingly digital world while addressing growing cybersecurity threats and budgetary needs.

In this article, we will discuss why it is important to have an IT strategy that scales to fit data growth and possible storage and management solutions to consider:
  • The state of data
  • Data growth and security threats
  • Change the way data is stored
  • Consider a hybrid storage system
  • Search for a new platform

The state of data

According to Cisco’s annual report on internet data, 66% of the population is expected to be using the internet by 2023. Coupled with the emergence of 5G, the future holds more internet users and more data collected from and about them than ever. Lightning-fast Internet speeds are fostering more connectivity and activity. Cisco also predicts more data usage across more devices, demanding higher speeds, fewer interruptions, more space, and tighter security.

All of these activities will create ever more data for businesses to collect, store, analyze, and monetize. That makes operational scalability of data a top priority for most businesses in 2021.

Data growth and security threats

That last note brings us to the topic of security. Collecting and managing data is only one side of the equation; keeping it safe is the other. In 2019, there were 1,473 documented data breaches, amounting to more than 164.68 records being compromised. As data usage and storage grows, the need for better security is important to enterprises and casual internet users alike. Customers want the confidence of providing their data so businesses can serve them better without exposing it to the prying eyes of digital criminals.

Unfortunately, as data grows exponentially, telecommunication companies are increasingly at risk for cybersecurity threats. These include DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks, which can cause severe outages designed to allow perpetrators to access sensitive data. Other attack strategies include malware targeting mobile devices and phishing scams.

Train employees to identify evolving threats, especially as 5G continues to roll out, and invest in tools to help them protect against cybercriminals. It is also valuable to consider how data is stored.

Change the way data is stored

One way to scale with growing data is to utilize a two-storage infrastructure that prioritizes data according to its usage. This strategy avoids wasting funds on storage space occupied by backup data. Prioritizing data is often referred to as “cheap and deep storage.”

Consider a hybrid cloud storage system

Hybrid cloud storage is one of the most popular modern solutions for your data, and for good reason. This best-of-both-worlds approach allows data storage on two (or more) infrastructures, using both cloud and on-premises servers to provide public cloud and private cloud storage.

This approach uses more than one vendor and benefits enterprises that want accessibility, scalability, and flexibility to fit the needs of the data. Especially sensitive data can be stored separately from less sensitive data on entirely different servers. Other benefits to this model include easier disaster recovery and accessible backup data.

By using two or more infrastructures to manage data, hybrid cloud storage effectively bridges the gap between cloud storage and on-site applications for a seamless management solution.

Search for a new platform

As your needs change, it is possible that your storage platform might need to change as well. One solution to cope with the changes associated with growing data is to reevaluate the platform you are using to store and manage this data. Options are evolving, led by popular platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, but there may be some newer options, potentially unknown to your business that are worth taking a look at.
